In reply to <a href="https://www.hikeforpurpose.com/groove-alcohol-stove/#comment-9954">Grant</a>.

Hey Grant,

With solid or gel I don't think this will work. Since it relies on the ability to suck up the alcohol to burn.

Haven't tried it though. So go ahead, but maybe do it outside with a bucket of water : )

Quick and easy design that could be made while hiking if needed! Is this only for fluid alcohol (ncluding ethanol) or will it work with gel and/or solid ethanol?

Big fan of wool. It's amazing. Check out the LL bean commando wool sweater. It was made for tough use. There are a plethora of them on eBay. They come in crew neck and Henley style. Tan, grey and olive. It's modeled after the British SAS "wooly pulley". $60-80 used.

I fully agree with a lot of this review and would just like to add that the Persistance is an excellent companion to your own fixed bushcraft knife. I prefer G10 which less Spydercos seem to use now - theres nothing wrong with FRN and it does look cool but it can be rougher on your hands and pockets.

Another solution is to build the FF Stove (with the inverted aluminum V-8 can as pictured above) to your Simmer Ring needs and build a Bicycle 3-spoke pot stand to the pot bottom lift height you need for the fastest Boil Time. In using the inner can as the pot lift, almost 4 square inches of the flame is shielded from striking the pot's center bottom, which can be easily verified by watching 2 cups of water come to a boil with no lid on the pot. With a 1 3/4" inner cylinder height you will not need a simmer ring at all using the FF stove in Stove Mode, with the pot resting on top of the stove. Instead of the flame hitting the pot bottom as a more than 2" wide cylinder, it will transform into a cone shaped flame pattern to heat much more of the pot bottom than the cylindrical flame can....Karl.

I did a test with some cotton I had laying around, but did not notice any improvement. Will give some steel wool further testing. The cotton adds a lingering smell factor.

This design mimics the Trangia B25 burner, but omites a detail of the Trangia, that is waick in form of a tube of cloth (Linen) around the inner wall - like a bottom less sock. In the Trangia page this wick is visible in a "exploded" stove.

Add a wick - cotton cloth, steel wool, fiberglass wool for insulation, carbon felt, ceramic wool... inside the closed camera, this reduce the bloom time.

Can make a kind of "Fancy Feast" stove without the Carbom Felt wick - or any other wick maerial; instead use corrugated sheet of beverage can around the inernal can, the corrugations create capilarity, work well, someone posted a video of this variation in YouTube.

Since Carbon Felt is expensive and difficult to find in my "corner of whe world" I make one using an Coke can for the esternal part (fuel depot), and deodorante bottle for internal part (pot support) and steel wool (for cleaning cooking pots) as wick material, work well and surprisingly the steel wool create a "varnish" in the flame area and last longer. Probale the "varnish" came from some additve of the automotive Ethanol sold there.
